Our role was instrumental in securing multiple resource consents for various complex works, including seismic strengthening, partial demolition, construction, restoration, and enhancement of the Cathedral.

Working closely with the Anglican Diocese, design and engineering experts, and the Christchurch City Council, we navigated the intricate planning landscape required to preserve the Cathedral’s historical architecture while enhancing its seismic resilience. Key elements of the project included stabilising the main structure, implementing base-isolation foundations, reconstructing features like the west porch, Bell Tower, and rose window, and repairing internal elements. Sustainability and heritage preservation were integral to our approach. Original materials were salvaged where possible to minimise waste and maintain historical integrity.

Our work was set apart by the need to operate within a unique legislative framework, including the Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Act 2020 and a project-specific Order-in-Council. These bespoke legislative measures streamlined the resource consent process, allowing us to effectively manage the complexities associated with post-earthquake reconstruction in a heritage context.
