Tupuārangi Student Accommodation

Planz Consultants played a key role in securing resource consent for Tupuārangi, a 283-bed student accommodation facility standing 26.56 metres high on Homestead Lane, part of the University of Canterbury campus in Ilam.

The project required careful consideration of the adjacent Ilam Gardens and Homestead, a significant heritage item, as well as the nearby residential properties and other on-campus student accommodation blocks to ensure that the development blended in with the gardens and did not undermine the neighbours’ residential amenity.

We collaborated closely with the council and external heritage specialists to ensure the proposed design respected heritage values while meeting modern urban design requirements. The project was reviewed by the urban design panel prior to the submission of the application. Our proactive approach and strong partnerships with the council, architect, and heritage consultants ensured that the project proceeded on a non-notified basis, enabling timely approval.
