Dean Chrystal Awarded NZPI Fellowship for Outstanding Contribution to Planning

We are thrilled to announce that Dean We are thrilled to announce that Dean Chrystal, Director at Planz Consultants Limited, has been awarded a Fellowship of the New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI) in recognition of his significant and sustained contributions to the planning profession in Aotearoa.

With over 35 years of experience, including more than 20 years as a Full Member of NZPI, Dean has demonstrated outstanding leadership across high-profile planning projects throughout New Zealand and internationally.

As a founding Director of Planz since 1998, Dean has led transformative developments such as The Press Precinct redevelopment, the Te Rere Hau Wind Farm, Darfield Milk Powder Plant, and the Port of Tauranga Inland Port. Dean’s influence extends beyond project delivery. He has served as an accredited Commissioner since 2004, chairing and participating in over 100 hearings on resource consents, plan changes, and district plan reviews. His leadership has been integral to shaping strategic planning decisions for councils across the country, including the Te Tai o Poutini Plan on the West Coast.

Dean’s service to the profession includes eight years on the NZPI Council, a term as Vice President, and the NZPI Distinguished Service Award in 2013. He has actively supported the next generation of planners through mentorship, education, and university advisory roles, and has delivered NZPI’s Introductory Ethics course between 2016–2022.

This Fellowship recognises not only a career of technical excellence but also a deep commitment to the growth, integrity, and advancement of planning in Aotearoa.
